Paris Saint-Germain turn 50 this year, and to celebrate, PSG.fr has turned the spotlight on 12 important dates in the club's founding. Today we travel back to 14 August 1970.
On 14 August 1970, on the legendary Saint-Ouen pitch, Paris Saint-Germain, then an ambitious second division team, locked horns with first-division side Red Star. Three days earlier, the Audonians had beaten Valenciennes (2-1), who had been drafted into the league's elite.
Paris Saint-Germain, who had only been back in training for a fortnight, were still looking for a first win after a 1-3 defeat against Quevilly (1-3, 01/08/1970) then a draw against Entente Bagneux Nemours Fontainebleau (1-1, 08/08/1970).
For this match, the Parisians tried out a certain Zivko Lukic, a Yugoslav midfielder who played in the youth team at Partizan Belgrade and who would become the first foreign player to wear the club's colours.
The first Parisian derby was attended by many curious spectators, and against all expectations, Les Rouge et Bleu won 2-1, with goals from Jean-Louis Brost and Jean Djorkaeff from the penalty spot.
The Parisian captain confided at the end of the match, with a certain caution: "We have a good team, with competent leaders, but we are also learning. That's why everyone will have to do their bit, because it's likely to be difficult to everything to come together."
But Paris Saint-Germain hit the heights during this first season, finishing second division champions.
The Paris Saint-Germain team for this first historic victory: Choquier - Mitoraj, Fitte-Duval (Béreau), Guicci, Djorkaeff (c) - Béreau (Lukic), Destrumelle - Brost (Rémond), Prost, Guignedoux, Bras. Coach: Phelipon.
