Spain and Iceland through to main round

News

Having beaten Russia and the Netherlands, Spain and Iceland are looking forward to the main round with confidence, while Denmark are still a long way from being out of the tournament.

Iceland-Russia: 34-23
Left on the bench for the second match of the preliminary phase, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson was well placed to watch his side's sweeping victory over the Russians - a one-sided game that the Icelanders led from start to finish. Already well ahead at half-time (18-11), they managed to maintain their lead and punch their ticket for the main round. It remains to be seen whether they will take two points or none at all with them, knowing that defeat for Iceland against Hungary in the last match would automatically lead to the elimination of Denmark.

Denmark-Hungary: 24-24
Mikkel Hansen's Denmark drew with Hungary after losing to Iceland in their Euro 2020 opener, and the Scandinavians no longer hold their fate in their own hands. The Danes flirted heavily with elimination, however, as they were behind on the scoreboard right up until the 57th minute (24-23), but then Hungary equalised. Thus the group's second main-round ticket is still up for grabs, and worse still for Denmark, victory over Russia in their final group-phase match will not be enough if Iceland lose to Hungary.

Netherlands - Spain: 25-36
Spain are now focused on the main round, which will be played in Vienna, and it is with a sense of accomplishment that they travel to the Austrian capital - thanks in no small part to Rodrigo Corrales, who made 20 saves against the Dutch and was voted best player of the match.

The Spaniards really made their task an easy one, which augurs well for their meeting with Croatia or Germany in the main round.
