Round of 16 results

News

On Thursday night, Paris Saint-Germain Handball punched their ticket for the EHF Champions League quarter-final with a return-leg win at home to Celje (31-23). Check out the rest of the round of 16 results, including that of Les Rouge et Bleus' quarter-final opponents.

Kiel - Szeged: 56-66
After winning in the first leg in Hungary (28-33), Kiel did it again and beat Szeged by exactly the same scoreline on Wendesday. Once again, Sander Sagosen was at his best, top-scoring in the match with nine goals. This is the same status he had last week, with eight goals. Our team will face the reigning European Champions in the next round - a chance to meet up with their former centre-half.

Zaporozhye - Mehskov Brest: 55-60
The task was more complicated for Meshkov Brest, who started with a two-goal aggregate deficit after their first-leg defeat in Ukraine (32-30). But this time, the Belarusians did not falter and they had the tie turned around by half-time (30': 16-8), thanks in no small part to the seven goals of Mikita Vailupau. Brest managed to maintain their lead throughout the final 30 minutes and earned their place in the quarter-finals!

Nantes- Kielce: 58-56
There will be another French team in the next round! Indeed, The H defeated 2016 European Champion Kielce. Despite being on the back foot after conceding a one-point defeat at home in the first leg (24-25), Nantes rallied and pulled a three-goal win in Poland - feat performance that they owe in part to the stunning showing from 'keeper Emil Nielsen, who made ten saves.

Vardar - Veszprém: 57-80
Just like Paris Saint-Germain, Veszprém are one of the teams who perfectly controlled their double-header. The Hungarians were in the driver's seat after a big win in North Macedonia (27-41) and on Thursday, Rodrigo Corrales and his partners finished the job by obtaining another nice victory (30-39). Once again, the Hungarians progress to the quarters, a stage they have reached in every campaign save one (2018) since 2008.

Porto - Aalborg: 56-56
On paper, it was surely one of the most evenly balanced fixtures of the round, and it proved to be in fact as well, with the double-header decided by a single goal in the end! Fate chose to smile on Aalborg who, thanks to their 29 goals in the first leg (32-29), qualified by scoring more times than the Portuguese away from home (27-24 for the Danes on Wednesday afternoon). The Scandinavians thus clinched the first quarter-finals berth in club history!

Elverum - Barcelona: 44-76
Earlier in the week, Barcelona had made easy work of Elverum. Almost assured of a place in the next round after their first-leg win (25-37), last season's runners-up confirmed, on Monday, their qualification for the next round (19-39). In individual terms, Mamadou Lamine Diocou Soumare stood out by finding the net with every one of his six attempts.

Flensburg - Zagreb: Flensburg qualified automatically after Zagreb's forfeit due to an outbreak of COVID-19.

Check out the full quarter-final draw!

The matches will take place between May 12 and 20.
