Medals awarded as World Championship wraps up

Sunday afternoon marked the end of the 2021 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Two matches were on the program (the final and the third-place play-off), with three of the four teams featuring representatives of Paris Saint-Germain Handball.

Spain - France: 35-29
In this third-place play-off, a France side featuring Vincent Gérard, Nedim Remili and Yann Genty (Luka Karabatic, injured in the quarters, was absent) faced the Spain of Viran Morros and Ferran Sole Sala. This duel of Rouge et Bleus ended up going the way of the Iberians who, after after a good start (4': 4-0), ran away with it thanks notably to the excellent performance of our right winger, Ferran, who fired a 4 from 5. For France, Nedim managed to find the net twice, but was unable to turn the situation around in favour of the Les Bleus. Spain thus claimed third place in the World Championship, while France finished at the foot of the podium.

Denmark - Sweden: 26-24
Mikkel Hansen remains Champion of the World! Our left-back and his Danish compatriots repeated their 2019 performance by prevailing over neighbours Sweden in the final. It was a close affair, with tension the order of the day as the final minutes approached (44': 21-20), but in the end it was Mikky and his teammates who claimed the World Championship - and Scandinavian bragging rights - with a powerful performance in the last 20 minutes. The Parisian, named the competition's MVP, was one of the driving forces behind Denmark's success, bagging seven goals, while 'keeper Niklas Landin made an impressive 15 saves).
