Luc Steins: 'It's form on the day that counts'

On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain Handball play Chambéry in the Coupe de France Round of 16. Check out the chat we had with Luc Steins before throw-off.

For this Coupe de France Round of 16 clash, you will face Chambéry, whom you beat last week (36-32). Is that an advantage?

"I don't know. It's positive for the preparation, because we have already seen their system. But that's also the case for Chambéry. Both teams can analyse the last game to put the other in difficulty. It's form on the day that counts."

Are you expecting the same game?

"They had a few guys missing. We'll have to see who is present this time. But what's certain is that once again, they won't give an inch. Even less so in the Coupe de France. We will have to be at 100% to win."

What does the Coupe de France mean to you?

"I've won it twice and it's exceptional to win it. The final is played at the end of the season, in a sold-out AccorHotel Arena. It's even more special. You can't make a mistake, because if you lose, it's over. You have to be focused from start to finish."

Next week you're back in the EHF Champions League. Is it good to be three points clear of third place?

"Yes, but we haven't played half the group stage yet. We shouldn't look too much at the standings. We played Veszprém and Magdeburg and we are still second, but there are still a lot of games left. We can lose anywhere, so nothing is decided."

How do you view this group?

"Like last year, the teams are solid. There may not be the 'big boys' in our group, but that doesn't mean anything. We have to try to finish in the top two to go straight to the quarter-finals. But even at this stage, we will meet some good teams. We want to qualify first and then we'll focus on the top two places."

How do you feel about the new season?

"I feel good, both in the team and in the Club. That's why I extended my contract at the end of last season. I was very happy to extend early. It gives me confidence. I am happy with our game and my role in the team. I am proud to continue the adventure with Paris."

How is it going in the squad?

"We have lost some players, but new ones have arrived. For the future, it's good to have young players, like Yoann (Gibelin) who will settle in for the duration. Elohim (Prandi) and Dainis (Kristopans) are compensating very well for the departures of last summer.

What do you think of Elohim's recent performances?

"It's only natural that he was voted best player in the Liqui Moly StarLigue in October. He walks on water! He is an incredible player. He is needed in a team like ours. We need him. He's playing his role well. I hope he continues to help us like this and I'm sure he will."
