Thiago Silva: 'Two of the best attacks in the world'

Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva admitted he was expecting plenty of fireworks when ‘two of the best attacks in the world’ meet in the opening match of the UEFA Champions League when the French champions play Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday:

What sort of match are you expecting tomorrow?

We expect a very tough game tomorrow against a very good side, finalists last season. I hope it will be a magnificent match to watch and also for us players, to try and get a big away win. That’s what we have prepared for.

How is it going with new coach Thomas Tuchel?

Each coach has his own way of working. We have adapted very quickly to his methods, on and off the pitch. We are very happy to have Thomas Tuchel as a coach and I think he will help us a lot this season. His ability to motivate the squad is a special advantage. He has done a great job at Dortmund and his is doing a great job here. We as players know exactly what do when we step onto the pitch and that’s the most important thing.

Is it a good thing to be playing Liverpool first up in the Champions League?

It’s a good thing… but we don’t choose who we play. It will be a tough game in a very good atmosphere… just as it will be at the Parc des Princes. Our supporters will be here tomorrow night and we hope to win for them too. We have prepared for this match and our supporters will be great and it’s a great chance for the fans to see two of the best attacks in the world with their three up front and our three attackers. But now it’s time to relax and prepare tactically and calmly for tomorrow’s game.

Have the recent defeats in the Champions League taught you anything?

You can’t just forget the past. Sometimes you have to think about things you do well and also things that didn’t go so well and ask why? You can’t forget things that happen in football. But its also true in life off the pitch. I was very sick in 2005 and I will never forget it. It was very hard for me and my family. I didn’t play for a whole year. But it gives you strength. Football is the same – these things can make you stronger, and me and my teammates are ready to make a good start tomorrow in a very important competition for us.
