Stats & Facts: A look back at the win in Montpellier

Match in numbers

Take a look at the key stats and facts from the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Montpellier HSC this Wednesday 1st February.

Paris carry on winning

With this victory in Montpellier, Paris have won 16 of their 21 Ligue 1 matches this season. This is already the fifth time since the 2015/16 season that the club has reached at least this number at this stage of a Ligue 1 season (18 in 2015/16, 2017/18 and 2018/19, 17 in 2019/20), whereas this had only been achieved 3 times before in the entire history of the championship (16 wins for Nîmes in 1959/60, Saint-Etienne in 1968/69 and Olympique Lyonnais in 2006/07).

A sixteenth victory for Paris Saint-Germain means that they have 51 points after 21 games and remain top of the table ahead of Olympique de Marseille (46 points) and RC Lens (45 points).

another record for Warren Zaïre-Emery

Warren Zaire-Emery became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the club from the capital at the age of 16 years and 330 days when he scored his first professional goal against Montpellier in matchday 21 of Ligue 1. He is now ahead of Bartholomew Ogbeche, who scored at 17 years and 55 days against FC Nantes on 25 November 2001.

A new record this season for Warren Zaire-Emery, who had already become the youngest player in the history of the Rouge et Bleu last August when he made his debut against Clermont a few weeks after signing his first professional contract. On the European stage, he became the youngest player in the history of the club to play in a Champions League match against Maccabi Haifa last October. Finally, at the age of 16 years and 313 days, he became the youngest player in the history of Paris Saint-Germain to start a Ligue 1 match on 15 January, when he played against Stade Rennais FC.

The parisians love playing Montpellier

Montpellier have lost their last 4 home games against Paris in Ligue 1, conceding at least 3 goals each time. This is the longest losing streak for MHSC at home against the Parisian club in the top flight.

Lionel Messi, meanwhile, scored his third Ligue 1 goal against Montpellier, making them his favourite target in the competition. His first two goals against the French side date back to 14 May 2022, when the Parisians last travelled to La Mosson. The Argentinian striker attempted nine shots in the match, his highest total in all competitions for Paris since joining the club from the capital.

In the end, Laurent Nicollin's club is the most successful for Christophe Galtier, as it is the team against which he has won the most (16 times in 25 games) and scored the most goals (43) in Ligue 1 as a coach.

Hugo Ekitike decisive once more

The French striker has been decisive on 6 occasions (3 goals, 3 assists) in his last 7 Ligue 1 games. A series he started last November with an assist to Neymar Jr against FC Lorient, before providing another assist and a goal against AJ Auxerre just before the World Cup.

In the first match of 2023, he scored the only goal for Paris at RC Lens before scoring again at the Parc des Princes against Angers SCO. In yesterday's game against MHSC, the young Parisian delivered another assist, this time for Fabian Ruiz's opening goal.
