For the final in Lisbon - 50 years to the day since the club's very first competitive fixture - Thomas Tuchel retained the outfield players that had beaten RB Leipzig in the semi-final, but Keylor Navas - a three-time UEFA Champions League winner - returned in goal.

Bayern Munich pressed high from the off - as is their wont - and gave the Parisians very little space to work in. Wave upon wave of Bayern attack broke on the Paris backline, however, the competition's best defence keeping its most prolific frontline at bay.

Kylian Mbappé caused the Bayern rearguard some concern. He saw two shots blocked (12', 15'), and then teed up Neymar Jr, who saw his shot and follow-up saved by Manuel Neuer (17').

There were chances at the other end too. Robert Lewandowski swivelled to send a shot off a post (21') and he then forced a brilliant save from Navas with a close-range header (31'). Angel Di Maria fired a shot wide (23') and Ander Herrera saw a powerful shot ricochet wide (28') as the Parisians looked just as likely to open the scoring.

Bayern made the breakthrough just before the hour mark when Kingsley Coman headed home (0-1, 59') and only a Thiago Silva clearance saved the Parisians from even greater peril as their opponents swarmed (61').

Tuchel's men dug deep though. Marquinhos forced Neuer into a save, and Neymar Jr and Mbappé led the charge in the closing stages. The Brazilian saw a shot curl just wide (72'), and the ball didn't drop happily for the Parisians inside the penalty area in the nervy closing stages (90+2').

Disappointment, then, in the Portuguese capital to bookend a wonderful European campaign that will hopefully be just the first of many to come for the capital club.
