Presnel Kimpembe: 'Don't underestimate them'

News

Paris Saint-Germain's World Cup-winning defender looks ahead to Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Last 16 second leg tie with Manchester United (kick-off 21:00CET).

Presnel, what's your thoughts on the season so far?
"Collectively, the season has been very positive so far. We're building something good, and we also want to finish it well. There are still some great games to come, notably against Manchester United. The season isn't over yet, but we're on the right track."

You could see there was a real bond between the players and the fans in the first leg...
"It was the perfect scenario. The fans were incredible, we felt as if we were at home. It was really important for us to have their support, to know that they were behind us. The whole team played well, we won 2-0. We now have to handle the second leg well. We're going to have to be solid and above all not take the match lightly in order to go through."

You scored your first senior goal at Old Trafford...
"I couldn't stop thinking about scoring my first goal for the first team. My teammates had been making fun of me since the start of the season, but I had promised them I would score in a big European game. I did that, I'm proud and very happy."

What went through your mind at that moment?
"I had lots of ideas about celebrations in my head, but it all happens so quickly. I ran towards our fans, I slid on my knees and I didn't have the time to stand up. Moussa grabbed me, we fell, and everything happened so quickly. It's very difficult to explain, but I now know what it's like to score a goal."

How are you approaching the second leg?
"You must never underestimate an opponent like that. We know it'll be a tough game, even if we have a two-goal head start. Even with some players on the sidelines, Manchester United is still Manchester United. You have to respect their status as a big European club. They have to score, they have to get a result, so we know they'll try to put us under pressure. It's up to us to approach the game well to qualify. We really played well at Old Trafford. But we have won just half of the battle. The second half is at home. We have to prepare well and put in a big performance in order to achieve our objectives."
