Paris ease back into things

News

The key moments
They may have had a 13-day break between league games, but that did not stop Paris Saint-Germain from hitting the ground running. They began with gusto and Walter Benitez in the home goal was soon in action to deny Presnel Kimpembe and Abdou Diallo in quick succession (3'). The Argentine was helpless, however, when two of his compatriots, Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi, teamed up for the opening goal: the latter providing the former with the pass, and a sidefoot finish did the rest (0-1, 15'). Leandro Paredes then forced the Nice goalkeeper into another save (18') before Di Maria - picked out by Thomas Meunier - added a fabulous second with a delicious lob carved with the outside of the boot (0-2, 21'). Di Maria (33'), Kimpembe (36') and Thiago Silva (40') all might have added more before the break.

The second 45 minutes were not as smooth for the visitors as the first. Pierre Lees-Melou brought a stop from Keylor Navas (48') with Icardi (50') and Marquinhos, who sent a header off the crossbar (60') replying. Ignatius Ganogo pulled one back (1-2, 67'), but the hosts' momentum was halted when first Wylan Cyprien (74') and shortly after Christophe Hérelle (77') were dismissed. With a two man advantage, the reigning French champions had more space, and Kylian Mbappé, who had come off the bench six minutes earlier, made the points safe (1-3, 88') before Icardi gave the scoreline a gloss (1-4, 90+2'). With a fourth away win in five trips, Paris now have five points in hand over second-placed Nantes.

A Parisian in the match: Angel Di Maria
El Fideo ripped the game away from Nice in the space of six first-half minutes, recording his seventh L1 brace. He has now been involved in an impressive 20 L1 goals in 2019, scoring 13.

The word: Trips
Whether it be Metz, Lyon, Bordeaux or the Allianz Riviera, it's the same thing. Paris Saint-Germain have now scored in their last 24 L1 away games. Only Sedan (32) and Rennes (26) have ever done better in the French top flight. The trip to the Côte d'Azur brought up their biggest away win of the season so far.

Coming up
It's Belgium next where Paris will be in Bruges on Tuesday (kick-off 21:00CEST) in an attempt to win their fourth successive UEFA Champions League away game, which would be a club first. The Group A leaders, who have four points in hand on their Belgian opponents, will seek to end Brugge's six-game unbeaten run in the competition to move a step closer to the knockout stages.
