Paris – Bordeaux: The five goals that left their mark on the capital

News

Before Les Parisiens host Les Girondins on Saturday on Matchday 12 of Ligue 1, here's a look back at some of the goals that have left their mark on this historical clash.

Ney's free-kick

September 2017. Neymar Jr's very first season in the City of Light and he was already showing signs of his brilliance.

Before welcoming Les Bordelais to the Parc des Princes, the n°10 had already been involved in no less than 12 goals in 7 matches. In an unbridled match, the Brazilian continued his form, scoring directly from an incredible free-kick in the 5th minute. From around thirty metres out, the forward beautifully curled the ball into an entirely helpless Benoît Costil's net.

Just 7 minutes later, he set up Edinson Cavani for the second goal of the game, and then scored from the penalty spot at the end of the first half.

Draxler's inspiration

In September 2017, it wasn't only Neymar Jr who pulled out his best stuff. That evening,  Julian Draxler also dazzled fans with an impressive performance. A goal that was as a beautiful in its conception as it was in its conclusion.

Julian Draxler won back the ball in his own half before launching a supersonic counter-attack. And as Mbappé crossed, it was Julian Draxler, once again, who sprinted forward to get on the end of the Frenchman's ball and powerfully volley home with his left foot. A work of art.

Paris romped home to a 6-2 victory that evening.

Okocha's missile

Maybe the most beautiful of them all. In the warmth of that special summer of 1998, Paris trailed 2-0 at the Parc Lescure, against an impressive Girondins side. Alain Giresse decided to throw on Augustine "Jay-Jay" Okocha for the final quarter of an hour, giving him his first appearance for the club. What came next remains engraved on everybody's mind.

With one of his first touches, the Nigerian forward eased past two defenders before sublimely striking from 30 metres out, almost breaking the back of Ulrich Ramé's net. A real delight. The kind of goal where seconds become minutes and time stands still as eyes watch on in disbelief.

His presentation had been made and although the goal wouldn't stop Les Parisiens from falling to defeat (3-1), the result pales into insignificance and it is the beauty of the goal that remains in the mind as one of the best in the history of clashes between the two sides.

The return of the Eagle to Gironde

How can you talk about the link between Bordeaux and Paris without considering the unforgettable Pedro Miguel Pauleta?

In November 2005, it was a restless Rouge et Bleu side that travelled to the Chaban-Delmas, a ground at which they hadn't won in 17 years... but that evening would be Les Parisiens' night. After Marco Yepes got the opener, it was the former Bordelais, Pauleta, who drove home the knife into wound. From a shooting distance 20 metres out, the Portuguese curled an unstoppable shot to the back post, beating Ulrich Ramé.

The goal made it 2-0, and the visitors conserved that lead until the final whistle. A rather special win and Les Girondins de Bordeaux's only loss at home in the league... Pauleta, was in the headlines again in April 2006, for the return match: as he picked up a hat-trick against his former side at the Parc des Princes.

Cavani's volley

Of course, there was no way that Paris Saint-Germain's top scorer wasn't going to feature in the best five goals. Against Les Girondins, the n°9 ensured his moment of glory. It was back in February 2017, Paris sat in second place in the league and needed the win at Bordeaux on Matchday 25 of Ligue 1. After picking up braces in the same stadium the previous month in the semi-final of the Coupe de la Ligue (1-4), Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria were back in business. The Argentine got one and the Uruguayan got another brace, taking his goal tally to 25 in 25 matches. But it's the style with which he found the back of the net that remains in the memories of all.

An instinctive goalscorer, Edinson Cavani once again demonstrated his formidable ability to gobble up any form of crumb with just one touch of the ball. After Bordeaux failed to clear their lines from a long ball forward, the Uruguayan, camped on the edge of the box, didn't take his eye off of the ball before burying a devastating volley into the back of Cédric Carrasso's net.

It was also against Bordeaux, that the Paris Saint-Germain top scorer got his last goal in a Paris shirt. A cherry on his goodbye cake, it was his 200th.
