Before joining up with the Belgium national team, Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier took a look back over the 2018-19 season with PSG TV.
Thomas, how important is winning the Ligue 1 championship?
"For an ambitious club like Paris Saint-Germain, winning the league is the most important trophy and you can win it as early as possible or you can win it late with a little more suspense. It’s a whole lot of factors that mean winning the league is almost an obligation for Paris every season. It’s the end point of what has been a very good season for Paris in the league. There are several indicators that show it was a very good campaign and the cherry on top is winning the title."
How do you judge this 2018-19 league campaign?
"It was an exceptional campaign. The team wanted to break records, like every year. Every year we manage to set new records, most of the time beating records set by Paris Saint-Germain. You mustn’t underestimate the work done by the coaching staff, the players and the entire club and the supporters… We are one big family and we work hard every season to be the best. It's important to remind people that it's never easy. It's easier to reach the top, than it is to stay there."
The season started with a record-breaking run of 14 straight wins…
"A fantastic record! Most of the players carried their form through from the World Cup. When you only have two or three weeks holiday and you prepared well for the World Cup, you still have the rhythm and the motivation. We rode the wave of the 2018 World Cup into the new season and that record was the result..."
How was this season on a personal level?
"I’m not used to getting injured and in 2019, I had three injuries, one after the other that kept me sidelined for a month each time and three months is a long time. But I’m quite happy with my stats, which are very positive for the number of matches I played and I’m continuing to build on my first appearances with PSG and each season getting better and better. I do my best for the team and when we work well as a team, we are rewarded individually as well!"
