Luis Enrique: 'I am convinced that this competition will be exciting'

News

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, featuring 32 teams, is fast approaching. It’s an opportunity for Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique to delve into this new competition, speaking to FIFA.

Our ROuge et bleu's schedule

In a few days, Paris Saint-Germain will take part in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, bringing together 32 of the biggest clubs in the world. The Rouge et Bleus will start the tournament against Atlético Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles on 15 June, before facing Brazilian side Botafogo on 19 June. The club from the capital will then take on Seattle Sounders for the final group match on 23 June.

A unique experience for Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique: "We are representing France, but from a club's perspective, which will be interesting. I am convinced that this competition will be exciting."

A SPECIAL compEtition

"The difference is that, to give an example, most of the best South American players play in Europe, and I would even dare say the same goes for the best African and Asian players. Europe is the continent with the most competitive leagues and, in theory, the best players. This will certainly have an impact on the competition, but I believe the FIFA Club World Cup will become a benchmark in the future. I think it's very appealing."

Parisian supporters coming from across the globe

When speaking about the competition, Luis Enrique expressed his delight for American fans who are used to watching Paris Saint-Germain matches on television: "Every time we’ve had the chance to go to Asia or another continent, we’ve felt the love and support from so many people. People who may have never been to Paris, or even to France. Some may have visited on holiday and continue to support Paris Saint-Germain. It’s really heartwarming to see the impact clubs have around the world, and it’s always a joy to receive all that affection."

Paris Saint-Germain's objectives

"The goal is the same for every competition: to prepare to win the tournament. I believe we are one of the best clubs on the planet. Now, with this first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, the objective is clear: to be competitive and go as far as possible to have a chance at winning."

Are the european sides Favourites?

"I think the main favorites will be the European teams. I have no doubt that if South American players were playing in Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay, then South or Central American clubs, or even African teams, would have a greater chance. But it’s clear that we, the European clubs, have an advantage because we not only have the best European players, but also the best from Africa, the Americas and Asia.

I think it would be logical for a European team to win this competition. But football is a sport that doesn’t follow logic, where anything can happen—especially in a short tournament like the FIFA Club World Cup. Let’s not forget that from the Round of 16 onwards, it’s all knock-out matches. The quarter-finals, the semi-finals, the final... Football is a sport that always leaves room for surprises."
