News

History, what's at stake and the keys to the match! Take a look at everything you need to know ahead of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern Munich, this Tuesday 14 February at 21:00 at the Parc des Princes.

a bit of history...

Paris Saint-Germain will face Bayern Munich for the 12th time in European cups, with a record of 6 wins and 5 defeats.

Only two European teams have crossed paths with the Rouge et Bleu more often in Europe: FC Barcelona (13 matches) and Real Madrid CF (12 matches), who will be caught up with tonight.

Paris Saint-Germain will also play their 15th match against Bayern (friendly and official matches), the 4th most frequent opponent of the Rouge et Bleu (excluding French clubs) behind FC Barcelona, SL Benfica Lisbon and Real Madrid CF (17 matches).

It is the 26th official match for Paris against a German club (11 matches against Bayern Munich, 4 against Borussia Dortmund, 5 against RB Leipzig, 2 against VfL Wolfsburg, 2 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1 against Schalke 04). The Parisians have won 14, drawn 2 and lost 9.

Paris Saint-Germain will play their 142nd UEFA Champions League match against the Munich side (77 wins, 27 draws and 37 defeats).

The club from the capital will also play their 254th European match*, with a record of 133 wins, 57 draws and 63 defeats.

Five players have played for both teams: Juan Bernat, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman, Renato Sanches and Tanguy Kouassi.

what's at stake...

Paris Saint-Germain will be making their 20th appearance in a European Cup Round of 16, having gone through 13 times and lost six times.

The club from the capital is making its 30th European appearance since the Cup Winners' Cup debut in 1982-83, and its 11th consecutive UEFA Champions League appearance.

Paris are also one of four clubs still unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League this season along with SL Benfica, Manchester City FC and today's opponents FC Bayern Munich.

German clubs have only managed to win once at the Parc des Princes, with Paris Saint-Germain winning nine, drawing one and losing just once in 11 games. The only defeat was against Bayern (0-1, 13 April 2021), with the Rouge et Bleu winning 3-2 in Bavaria in the first leg.

The Parisians are no strangers to Germany, where they have qualified four times in two-legged ties against Wolfsburg (2-0 and 3-1 in the 2008-2009 UEFA Europa League round of 16) and Bayer Leverkusen (4-0 and 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League round of 16), UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2013-2014), Borussia Dortmund (1-2 and 2-0, UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2019-2020) and Bayern Munich (3-2, 0-1, UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2020-2021).

the keys to the MATCH...

Paris Saint-Germain's forward line is rarely kept quiet in European matches, with a run of 14 matches with at least a goal in the last two seasons in the UEFA Champions League. 31 goals in total, 22 of which are scored by the Kylian Mbappé (13 goals) - Lionel Messi (9 goals) double act.

Paris Saint-Germain will be able to count on the return to the squad of Kylian Mbappé, who is always impressive in the UEFA Champions League, having scored seven goals in the Rouge et Bleu's last six European matches this season.
