Alessandro Florenzi, spotlight on the versatile Italian

News

The Italian defender has just signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan with an option to buy. The opportunity to take a look at his profile.

All lovers of Italian football know him. A real Swiss Army knife and incarnation of Calcio, Alessandro Florenzi is a well-known element of Italian football, as much for his decade spent with I Giallorossi alongside the unforgettable Totti and De Rossi, as for his years of service as part of the Squadra Azzurra, for whom he started again last week.

At Paris Saint-Germain, he will join up with his Italian compatriot, Marco Verratti, but also with other players that he knows well.

"I have already played with Marquinhos and Paredes, Marco Verratti for Italy. And I have already played against Mauro Icardi, who scored against me. Before signing, I spoke with Javi (Javier Pastore), but I also have to call him again because I was extremely busy with the medical. I also spoke with Paredes and Verratti yesterday, but only quickly because I didn't want to distract them on a matchday. But we will have time to speak in the coming days", he told us.

An experienced right back - he played no less than 227 matches with Roma, picking up 36 caps and he has 33 European matches under his belt - the 29 year old is also and above anything else, very versatile.

Beyond his combativeness and his abnegation, his recent campaigns also demonstrate his ability to deal with the demands of football at the highest level: 42 matches played in 2017-2018, 38 in 2018-2019 and 32 in 2019-2020.

"It's really very clear for everyone that Paris is one of the three or four biggest teams in the world. Last season, the team stepped up another level again, and the club continues to grow and make its place in the world. Next season, we will try to do even better", continued the Italian who is very clear about his objectives: "I want to help the team to win as often as possible, match after match. And my personal objectives are to show the coach on a daily basis what I can bring to the team."

His attacking stats also paint him in a positive light. Of all players who have played at least 100 matches in the top five European leagues, he is the most attacking defender since the 2012-2013 season, making the difference on 55 occasions (25 goals and 30 assists), that's a goal or assist every 293 minutes… He also boasts the second best goal scoring record for a defender over this period (25 goals), behind Sergio Ramos (42).
