50 legendary matches: Champions of France!

News

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations at the capital club, PSG.FR gives you the chance to relive some of the greatest matches in the history of Paris Saint-Germain. Today, a look back at the day when the capital club became champions of France for the first time in their history.

Party time at the Parc des Princes where Paris Saint-Germain will celebrate becoming champions of France for the first time against Bastia. The Paris directors have opened up the house and fans are invited to come along to the stadium for free to watch the game. Against a Bastia side already condemned to relegation, Paris Saint-Germain rapidly go in front from a Safet Susic corner helped on by Oumar Sène and finished off with his head by Robert Jacques for the opening goal (1-0, 4'). Luis Fernandez is taken down in the penalty area, but Dominique Rocheteau misses the chance to extend the lead as his penalty is kept out by the Corsican club's goalkeeper (18').

Two minutes later, Paris Saint-Germain put themselves out of SCB's reach, from another Susic corner met tremendously by Jacques's header (2-0, 20'). The Parisian festival continues and Fernandez hits the post (44'). After the break, Jean-Marc Pilorget scores an own goal after an effort by visiting forward Jean-Roch Testa (2-1, 52'), then the Rouge et Bleu get another penalty after a Michel Bibard foul. Symbolically, it's the captain Fernandez, who is on his way to Racing, who scores the last goal of the season (3-1, 65').

At the final whistle, Paris Saint-Germain can finally savour their first title as champions of France and the party starts: there are fireworks at the Parc des Princes and a parade at the Champs-Élysées. Since 1936 (50 years previously!), no Parisian club had won the title. Coach Gérard Houiller can't hide his emotions: "It's the greatest reward of my career. To put in such a performance, you have to have quality men. The Paris Saint-Germain players are talented and deserve the title."
