Kylian Mbappé: 'A huge opportunity'
Kylian, what does joining Paris Saint-Germain mean to you?
"It's a huge opportunity for me. What I wanted was to keep making progress at the highest level, and that's what the club has given me a chance to do here. I'm an ambitious player and Paris Saint-Germain is an ambitious club, so we have all we need to continue to grow together."
Everyone knows that Europe's biggest clubs were interested in signing you. What tipped the balance in favour of Paris Saint-Germain?
"Above all it was the sporting project. Paris is a great team that likes to have the ball, that makes its forwards shine and that, above all, wins trophies. That's what attracted me in footballing terms. I also took into account the personal side of things, as this move has given me the opportunity to the region where I was born and grew up. My family and friends are also thrilled, so it's a choice that got everyone's stamp of approval."
What are your objectives at your new club?
"I want to win everything. I came here to win trophies and I think Paris is the right side to help me fill out my trophy cabinet while helping me to make progress."
Your childhood friends told us that you all had the dream of play at Paris Saint-Germain together one day. They told us that by signing for this club, you made this dream come true for all of you…
"It makes me really happy, as these guys are very close to me. This really is a dream come true, but my choice to come here was, above all, about the football. It's here that I think I can feel the best."
Have you had a chance to talk to the coach about your role in the team?
"Yes, we have already had a chance to talk. As a youth player, I was trained to play in all three positions across the front line. I think I played as often on the right as I did on the left or through the middle. Even for me, it's difficult to pick one as my preferred position."
You made up your mind to join Paris in the middle of the summer. You must have been following Paris Saint-Germain's transfer activity, notably with the arrival of Neymar Jr…
"Even before Neymar's arrival, I found the project here at Paris very compelling. Of course it's extraordinary to have the chance to play alongside a player like him… but that's not what made up my mind to move here. It's certainly a great argument, but it wasn't the main one behind my choice."
People are talking about you, Cavani and Neymar Jr as the best attacking line in Europe. How are you dealing with this level of expectation?
"Really well! I will have the chance to play alongside two of the best forwards in the world, so I can only deal with it well. I'll keep my eyes and ears wide open so I can learn from them and demonstrate all my qualities."
Paris is your boyhood club. What do you remember fropm your years as a supporter?
"Ronaldinho! I'm a big admirer of Brazilian football and all it represents. In my opinion, Ronaldinho was the ideal embodiment of these values and he was my childhood idol. I still remember his elastico in the 3-0 win over Marseille (on 26/10/2002). What an amazing move..."
What do you remember of your visits to the Parc des Princes as a supporter?
"The incredible atmosphere in the stands has really stuck with me. You could really feel the crowd acting as the 12th man, pushing the players to give their all out on the pitch. Just recently I saw that the die-hard fan groups are back at the matches, and that's a very good thing."
Do you have a message for the supporters?
"I just hope that they continue to make their presence felt at the Parc des Princes. We the players love that!"
